Roomie Dinner Night - Sushi!

I have another roomie dinner night post for all of you.  Again, excuse the cell phone pictures but this is the best I could do.

This is not the first time we have made homemade sushi, so don't get too impressed.  It is actually pretty easy to do, and everyone sitting around the table slicing up the ingredients is a good time to chat before our mouths are full of sushi.

You have to get a special kind of sushi rice to make the rolls sticky enough, we ended up cooking 8 cups of rice.  Which we then left to cool on lined cookie trays like this:

While the rice is cooling down, chop up your ingredients.  We used cucumbers, avocados, tuna, salmon, crab and some tempura bits.  Some of the fish we made spicy and some we left alone.  Then we just got to rolling up whatever we wanted in the rolls and cutting them into pieces.

*** We put the rolling mats in large Ziploc bags so the rise doesn't stick and we don't have to clean the mats after!

You want to roll them up as tightly as possible so that they don't come apart when you splice them up.  You can put the rice on the inside like in the picture, so flip the seaweed over before you put in the fillings and roll it with the rice on the outside.

Keep rolling until you end up with too much sushi to eat:

We also had to have some spring rolls, (these aren't homemade)

This is always one of my favourite dinner nights, its always so much fun.
Have you guys ever tried to make sushi?

Tiny Tea Yourtea Teatox

First off, I would like to apologize for being so MIA.  My camera battery died, and of course I left my charger at home but I hope to get it back in a week!  I decided to suck it up and take some pictures with my phone because I need to post more.

Recently, I stumbled across one of my friends Instagrams about starting a Yourtea Teatox.  I hoped onto google to try to find a bad review, and truthfully I couldn't find a bad one.

It claims to clear your skin, reduce bloating, remove toxins and improve energy levels.  You consume a cup twice a day roughly 30 minutes before or after a meal.  I like this idea because you can still eat whatever you want, and hopefully get some positive outcomes from it.  Obviously, I plan to eat a little better than normally for the 14 days.  You can also do a 28 day cleanse but I thought I would start small.

If you want to order your own or get more information, check out their website:  I will post an update at the end of each week, and I plan to start tomorrow!

Funfetti Baked Donuts

I'm back at it with my new donut pan.  This time with sprinkles!  Because I live by the belief that sprinkles can solve anything.

I used my leftover sprinkles from these cookies because that's all I had on my shelf.  And I will admit that the black sprinkles made these donuts looks a little grey once they started to bleed, but they still tasted delicious!

My first glaze experience, and let me tell you glazed donuts are just better.  These babies are double dipped in warm glaze for the perfect coating.

I adapted the recipe from Sally's Baking Addiction.
For the donut you need:

  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup Greek yogurt
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup sprinkles
For the glaze:
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • extra sprinkles for on top

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F
You want to mix up the dry ingredients in one bowl, set it aside and whisk the wet ingredients together in another bowl.  Then add the dry to the wet but don't over mix (dough is very thick).  Next, fold in the sprinkles to limit the colours bleeding as much as possible.  Put the dough into a Ziploc bag, cut the corner and pipe it into a well greased donut pan (or muffin tin).
Bake for 8-10 minutes, until lightly brown around the edges.
Combine all ingredients for the glaze in a small saucepan and turn it on low.  Stir until sugar is dissolved and dip each of the donuts in on one side.  Then dunk all the donuts one more time, sprinkle with sprinkles and let cool slightly.  But make sure to eat these while they're still warm!

I'm finding that donuts only really taste good eaten the same day they are made, although most recipes say you can keep them in an airtight container for up to 2 days.  But this is okay because most recipes only make about 6-8 donuts. We enjoyed this sweet donuts while watching the Bachelor last night (Nurse Nikki or Andi for the win).

Any flavour suggestions for next?
I'm thinking something with chocolate or fruit!

Roomie Dinner Night - Taco Night

I apologize for being a little MIA recently, I have been busy with getting back to school and applying to some grad schools.  I'm also feeling a little uninspired but I hope that will change this week!  Since it was absolutely freezing this week up here in Canada, we stayed in most nights until it started to warm up.  One night in, we made a bunch of different tacos and enjoyed a few margaritas.  We do these dinner nights pretty frequently and I'm slightly upset that I haven't blogged about them yet so I have decided to start!

Look at this spread:

Paper plates because we're classy and too lazy to do dishes (duh).

We made 3 different types of tacos: shrimp, fish and steak.  Here are the fish and shrimp cooking away...

We also mixed up some salsa's to top a few of the tacos.  Guacamole for all of them, corn for the fish and mango for the shrimp.  We topped the beef tacos with pineapple and cabbage.

Here's the Korean Beef Taco all dressed up.  And yes those are homemade tortillas, they were a bit of a failure but they were not easy to make.  I don't know what is up with all those people on Pinterest that say you will never buy store bought again, we definitely ran out and bought some tortillas.

Next up, shrimp tacos with mango salsa.

And finally, fish tacos with corn salsa.

Do you ever try new things in the kitchen?

New Glasses!

I finally invested in a new pair of glasses!  For those of you that know me, know that I have horrible eyesight and have been wearing glasses since I was in Grade 3.  I had my previous pair for almost 5 years and decided it was time to get new frames instead of new lenses when my prescription went up... again.

I usually wear contacts because I just find glasses can be such a hassle most of the time.  You can't wear sunglasses over you glasses, they get rain or snow on them and dry into little droplets, they fog up as soon as you walk inside from the cold and they're impossible to lie down with on.  But I cannot see a foot in front of my face if I'm not wearing them or contacts so learn to love it I guess.

I got a pair of RayBans because I have two pairs of their sunglasses and love their frames.  So far I am happy with how they look and am just adjusting to the new strength (headaches... ugh) and the size of the lens/frame.

It took me so long to decide on a pair but I'm glad I finally did!
Do you guys wear glasses?

December Favourites!

This will be my first monthly favourites, but I hope to do these monthly from now on.  I am going to do a little bit of everything, beauty, recipes, TV, movies and any other unique discoveries from the month. I'd love to film these favourites because I think they would be a little more interesting to watch than to read, mainly because how exciting can a bunch of pictures of single products be?

Beauty Favourites

Macadamia Flawless Cleansing Conditioner: I only got this for Christmas so I probably should've waited to include this in next month's favourites but I am in love with this.  It leaves my hair so soft and doesn't dry quite as flat as it normally does when I let it air dry.

Revlon Colorburst Matte Balm in Standout: This served as the perfect Christmas red lip colour and is super easy to apply since it is in a lip crayon.

Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette: I know pretty much everyone else in the blogging/vlogging community will be saying Naked 3 is their monthly favourite but for me it's this palette because it's my first Naked palette.  Maybe one day when I'm not a starving student I will be able to afford the Naked 3.

Essie Sable Collar and Jazzy Jubilant: I sort of bounced between these two colours this month.  I love the muted sparkle in Sable Collar but played around a lot with with Jubilant doing glitter ombre's and using it as a topper for NYE.

Non-Beauty Favourites

Keeping up with the Kardashians: I started watching this on Netflix and as embarrassed as I am to admit this, I actually enjoy the show a lot more than I thought.  It's a good mindless show to watch while baking, wrapping presents and packing.

Breaking Bad: Yes, again I'm behind on this but I am halfway through season 3 with Graham and I just want to finish it.  Although I am finding season 3 super dull, lots of people have told me seasons 4 and 5 are AMAZING, but then I also heard this weekend that the first 3 seasons were the best?  Guess I have to find this out for myself.

Cinnamon Sugar Donuts:  Find the recipe here.  The first recipe I made using my donut pan from Christmas and it was a hit.  I want to make more this instant because I'm thinking about them again.

Kings of Leon - Mechanical Bull: Graham and I just got out tickets to go see them in January!  I'm so excited, here's my favourite song from the album:

What are your favourites for the month?  Let me know in the comments below!

2014 Style Resolutions

Happy New Year everyone!
I rarely make New Years Resolutions anymore because I make a list of things I want to do in the year at my birthday every year.  I also feel like every year I just want to get in better shape and eat better.  For 2013, I cut out Coca-Cola.  It was my favourite drink for such a long time and I found myself drinking it at least once a day, I knew I needed to cut it back so I went cold turkey for the past year.  I will say that I missed it and enjoyed a can with my hangover meal but definitely won't be going back to how I drank it before.  That being said, this year I wanted to make a list of style resolutions instead of health resolutions (although, I have some of those too).

So here are some of my Style Resolutions for 2014:

  1. Wear more skirts/dresses
  2. Use my hangers (keep clothes off the floor/bed/chair)
  3. Wear lipstick more often
  4. Don't be afraid to colour block
  5. Look more put together
  6. Add some outfit posts to my blog
  7. Change up my hair style daily
  8. Sew myself a dress
  9. Splurge on some basics (perfect black dress or heels)
  10. Wear clothes from my closet that still have tags on them

What are some of your new years resolutions?

Baked Cinnamon Sugar Donuts

Didn't take me long to give baking donuts a try and I am pretty impressed.  I started simple because I didn't want to have a tragedy and be afraid to try again.  I found this recipe for cinnamon sugar donuts from One Day At A Time.

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tbsp melted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
For topping:
  • 4 tbsp melted butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F and grease the donut pan.  In a medium mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, nutmeg and salt.  In a smaller bowl (or 2 cup measuring cup) lightly beat egg and add buttermilk, melted butter and vanilla.  Mix the wet ingredients into the dry until just combined.  Fill the pan 3/4 full and bake for 15-17 minutes.

I put the batter into a large Ziploc bag and cut the corner off to pipe the batter into the pan, which was a lot neater and easier in my opinion than spooning it in.

Once baked, remove the donuts from the oven and allow them to cool for a couple minutes before flipping them out of the pan.  Brush the donuts with the melted butter and them roll and toss them around in the cinnamon sugar mixture.

Enjoy them warm and they will be delicious.

Have you guys ever made baked donuts?  Any suggestions for what favour I should try next?
