How I Spent My Reading Week 2014

I spent my final reading week in Ft. Myers with my parents at my grandparents place.  Nothing special, just a chance for me to escape the reality back home and get away from the cold weather!  We ended up spending some time with my cousins and went out fishing with some family friends.  Of course mom and I did some shopping so look for those hauls once I get home and can take some pictures!

Anyway, here are some photos of my trip... we leave tomorrow to drive back to the snowy wonderland.

When we got here we were greeted by a very flurry new puppy.

We spent one afternoon out on the boat with my aunt, uncle and cousin.  We parked at Picnic Island and I was in charge of cooking up some burgers.

We saw lots of dolphins on the boat ride back!

But unfortunately no manatees...

The next day we went out for some ocean fishing, my first time ever!

We ended up with a good amount of fish for dinner..

We (by we I mean Mike) filed the fish and got them ready for the fish fry.

After dinner we sat back by the (ridiculously gorgeous) pool and enjoyed a glass of wine.

Overall I am glad I could get away for the week!

Also, I am thinking of re-branding One Broke Student which will include a name change seeing as I will be graduating.  What do you guys think about that?  As far as I can tell I can simply change the URL of the site and everything will still be in place... is that true?

Valentine's Nails

A little midterm procrastination for everyone in the form of a Valentine's Day mani.  Super easy to do, I had these little heart shaped glitter/confettis for a DIY I keep putting off and decided to try something out.  I got the glitter at Michael's in a pack with a bunch of other shapes and colours (stars, squares, music notes, etc.)

I started with two coats of Essie Fiji as the base and then put a top coat on, placed the glitter while the top coat was still wet and sealed with another top coat.  That's it!

I used the flash so that all the hearts would be seen but it turned my hands a weird colour so sorry about that.

What are your Valentine's Day plans?

And whats a mani without some music?

Maple Bacon Cupcakes

I have wanted to make maple bacon cupcakes for such a ridiculously long time I don't know why I never have.  I found this recipe on Your Cup of Cake and just couldn't resist.  A got a lot of weird looks from my friends who I told I was going to make bacon cupcakes, but everyone that tried them agreed that they were delicious.

It isn't a bacon cake or a bacon buttercream.  It's actually a vanilla nutmeg cake with a maple buttercream and some crispy bacon crumbled on top.

To make the cake I used:

  • Box of white cake mix
  • 1 1/2 tsp of ground nutmeg
  • 3 eggs
  • 1/3 cup of oil
  • 3/4 cup of milk
  • 3/4 cup of sour cream
  • 1 tbsp of vanilla extract
Bake the cupcakes based on the directions on your box, take them out and allow them to cool completely.
To make the buttercream:
  • 1 cup of softened butter
  • 4 cups of powdered sugar
  • 1-2 tsp of maple extract
  • 2 tbsp of milk
Cook around 8-10 strips of bacon, cut it up and sprinkle it on top.

I think they look fantastic and since I'm such a fan of salty/sweet desserts I thought they were delicious.

These are my second time baking with bacon, check out my Bacon Chocolate Chip Cookies here.

Have you guys ever had desserts with bacon in them?

YourTea Tiny TeaTOX Week 1

Okay guys so I have just finished my first week of my tiny tea tox.  I will say I wasn't the best at the timing of the tea drinking or doing it every day twice a day but I still did see some results.  I will also say that I am no fitness/nutrition/tea/detox expert of any kind, just a university student that wanted to try it out.
Taste: I will say that this is not my favourite tea flavour in the entire world, but it is definitely drinkable.  I will say that I think you need to like the flavour of tea in order to even remotely enjoy this tea.  It sort of tastes to me like a black/green tea.  Very herbal, I like to add a little bit of honey to it but it is definitely not over powering.
Bloating: First, I could really tell that I was not bloated.  When I woke up in the morning I felt fantastic and my tightest jeans slide right on (fresh out of the wash too!).  Especially since I started right before my time of the month, I could really tell that I didn't feel bloated or gross.  I also didn't have as bad of cramps as I usually do right before.
Face: I will tell you I haven't broken out at all on the tea, I don't usually have very bad break outs so I can't really say if this tea is helping with that or not... I feel like this would be something that would take longer than one week to decide.
Energy: This tea has replaced my morning coffee.  I feel just as awake afterwards as I do when I have a coffee without the coffee jittery feeling.  Although, I do miss my cup of joe in the morning (and Roll up the Rim is coming back in like two weeks for us Canadians).
Weightloss: I am not a big number on the scale person, I try not to pay attention to it.  I am more excited when my skinny jeans do up easier and I feel like my clothes fit better than when I see a smaller number on the scale.  That being said I did weigh myself on the first day to see if it made any difference and I ended up losing 3 pounds in the first two days.  Do with that what you will (fluctuation?) but like I said, my skinnies fit better and thats good enough for me.

Also this post is not sponsored in anyway, I bought this with my own money!

Football (Super Bowl) Cupcakes

As I'm sure all of you are aware, this past weekend was Super Bowl Sunday.  Naturally there were potlucks to attend and I was requested to bring cupcakes.  I get pretty excited about the Super Bowl (I can get really invested in sports games) and was really excited to make these football themed cupcakes.

I had quite a few ideas running through my head throughout the week about what I wanted to make.  First of all I knew I wanted to put my new Wilton Grass Icing Tip to use.  I decided to pipe some turf all over the cupcake and put footballs on top.  I had many ideas about what I was going to make the footballs out of, cake pops, moulded tootsie rolls, chocolate covered almonds.  But as I was walking through the bulk food store I found foil wrapped chocolate covered peanut butter "footballs."  Thank god I did because I know this saved me so much time (although once unwrapped they really just look like chocolate eggs so that could work too).

I piped green grass all over the cupcake and placed the footballs on top, finishing them off with some white buttercream laces.  I made chocolate cupcakes to look like the dirt and also used some vanilla cake with folded in sprinkles in the two teams colours.  They were a big hit at the different potlucks and I think they turned out just like I envisioned.

What did you guys make for Super Bowl Sunday??

January Favourites 2014

Wow I can not believe that January is over.  It was a slow month for my blog, but I was swamped with applications and getting back into the swing of a new semester.  I hope that when I get my camera charger back, it will motivate me to make some more stuff for on here!  I do have some cupcake posts coming up!

Beauty Favourites:
Urban Decay Naked 2 Palette: I got this for Christmas and have been having so much fun playing around with pretty much every shade in this palette.
Raspberry Pie Revlon Lip Butter: I have been loving putting a little dab of this all over my lips just for a little bit of berry colour for the day.
Real Techniques Brushes: Another amazing Christmas gift.  Finally a good collection of brushes, for a great price, I recommend these to anyone
NYX Super Skinny Marker Liquid Liner: I have had this for a while but am falling back in love with a cat eye and use this on my top lid to do so.
Maybelline Dark Circle Eraser: I seriously have the darkest circles under my eyes, doesn't matter how much I sleep they are always there.  I finally picked this up and this is so far the best under eye dark circle concealer I have found.

Other Favourites:
Favourite Music Discovery:
Cayucos.  A band that is going on tour with Young the Giant this year, check out this song and then listen to High School Lover if you like this one.

Favourite Cover:
Kings of Leon Dancing on My Own, haven't closed this tab on my computer since I found this video.  Making me even more excited for their concert in February.

Favourite TV Shows:
Nashville, I mean the twists before the Christmas break blew my mind and I am obsessed with this show.  Even if you're not a country music fan, if you like a show with lots of drama you will like this.  Normally I would say Pretty Little Liars in here but I am just getting so frustrated with the lack of answers from the show and the writing is getting too cheesy for me.
Rob Dyrdek Fantasy Factory.  Hello, funniest show in the world.  I friggin love this show so much and I am so sad that this is the final season, but so far it hasn't disappointed.  If I could switch places hang out with someone for the day, it would be him.
The Bachelor, yes I am guilty of religiously watching the Bachelor.  Do I enjoy Juan Pablo?  No.  Are the dates as amazing as usual? No.  But the girls this season are very entertaining (Kelly, you are hilarious and I love you) and the drama has already started.

Favourite Scent:
Snowday Candle.  I picked up this candle at Bath and Body Works along with some of their new spring scents.  But I have been burning this one all month because it's still freezing and snowy outside that I can't bring myself to burn the Peach Bellini or Margarita candles yet.

Favourite Movie:
The Wolf on Wall Street.  So hilarious and kinda sad and totally amazing.  Love this movie.
